So, 2 weeks after the Terra Firma, I was ready to do another event.
The Tsiba Trail run was held on the Helderberg Farm, between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.
The venue was absolutely beautiful. I had never been there and was really surprised and happy, seeing that my wife and kids had to get up at 05h30 to join me for the morning. Check out http://helderbergplaas.co.za/
Even though we are moving towards the end of January and the event started at 07h30, it was already hot. That really dry heat without a breeze in the air.
The event started at the entrance to a forest with a really narrow single track. I was happy about the cover but the single track caused quite a bottleneck and meant I was forced to slow down to a walk within the first 100 meters already.
Anyway, after finally finding a gap to overtake, I was running freely on pine needles and under the cover of low foilage. That was until I tripped and came down very hard on my face. No, I did not notice the fence wire across the path!
After coming out of the forest, we were on jeep track out in the open for a while before hitting a serious climb of “stairs” through the rocks. Single track, yes. Running track, no! Here most runners slowed down to a fast walk before coming out onto a steep jeep track again. This then turned to the left to start a zigzag section up to the highest point of the run. The view from there is postcard perfect. Here you can see from Gordon’s Bay on your left all the way to Cape Point on your right and then everything from the coast back towards the vineyards of Stellenbosch.
Steep up, means steep down, of course. Loose stones made it difficult to run downhill and a slow careful jog is all I could manage until I got back into the last bit a single track towards the start. Not the finish, as you may have noticed. My 2 laps meant another 5,5km before I could actually call it the finish.
All in all a great venue and testing trail. Yip, I’ll do it again.
