ATTAKWAS report
by Omri Kleynhans
The Friday it looked like we would have a wet Attakwas, early Saturday morning it was overcast and perfect riding weather compared with last years 38 degrees. The start of the route was changed up to where we entered the Attakwas nature reserve. This made for a more technical start than last year, but this is what mountain biking is all about. The route took us through the Chandelier Game Farm from were we entered the Attakwas Nature reserve. The views and jeep trails was awesome and the water points were excellent with more than enough to eat and drink. Then came the sharp descent to the Bonniedale (Spur) water point, were we had our complementary Spur burger and chips.
The route up to Bonniedale was not as wet as last year and this made the cycling easier.
From here onwards the real Attakwas race started. The climbing in the last part is more taxing after pushing hard for the first 60km. The rolling hills took its toll on my partner John and I, but we pushed on and the last two water points were like an oasis after all the climbing. The weather remained cool and we even had some light rain, this did not last for long.
What a beautiful part of our country and what a privilege to experience this on your mountain bike. The event was very well organized and the water points are the best I have seen in a long time.
We were fortunate not to have had any technical problems during the race.
Included photo`s of Attakwas warriors. What a RACE.
